The urgency of finches

A note from the birds…

“…
it is a serious thing

just to be alive
on this fresh morning
in the broken world.
I beg of you,

do not walk by
without pausing
to attend to this
rather ridiculous performance.

It could mean something.
It could mean everything.
It could be what Rilke meant, when he wrote:
You must change your life.”

~ Mary Oliver, Invitation

As you tear open this morning,
don’t stop with your eyes.

As you break free from your bed,
don’t stop with the covers

As you walk out into your day
As the sun breaks over the frost-covered earth
As it all stretches out before your broken eyes
May you dial in, however slowly, on one beautiful thing
And then another
And then another

Give thanks to Brother Sun
Bid adieu to Sister Moon, for a moment
Regard everything between their pages with love, even the thistles and burrs

Time to love louder.
