It’s NaNoWriMo? Are you writing yet?
For the uninitiated, NaNoWriMo is National Novel Writing Month, or NOVEMBER. Millions of people join together in the common goal of completing a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. Sounds impossible? Not so, my friend.
Some years ago, friends talked me into giving NaNo a whack. I mostly did it because I wanted my kids to give it a whack, so figured I’d better be a good example. If writing really is something anyone can do, then why would I shy away?
Because that is my modus operandi. My whole life I’ve said writing would be fun, but never until NaNo had I put pen to paper for more than a Christmas Letter. Over. Whelming.
So I NaNo’d. And unleashed a beast that I never knew was in there. Pretty exciting stuff, really.
If you haven’t taken the leap yet, it’s not too late. So you’re jumping in 1/3 of the way through November… so what? Adjust your goals accordingly. Make December your NaNoWriMo. Make NOW your NaNo. Just take a chance on it, for one month, and see what happens.
I’m not NaNo-ing this year. To be honest I haven’t since that first time. I should do it again, and maybe next year I will. But I am writing. I haven’t stopped since the day I started. What a life-changer.
Thanks, NaNoWriMo.
‘Til next time,
KJ
