The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy by Rachel Joyce

If it is possible, Queenie’s story is even more compelling than Harold’s. This is a beautiful book.
Harold’s story, from The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, is told here from the perspective of the woman he is walking to save, Queenie Hennessey. She writes from her hospice bed, a letter to be given to Harold before he is allowed to see her at the end of his walkabout. She has things to say, great and terrible things, and the only way she will get them out is through a letter, through this book.
As with Harold Fry, there are unseen things happening here, and Rachel Joyce brings them into full focus only when needed. Her storytelling is in top form, and the way she weaves words into a gorgeous tapestry has only grown. Everything about Queenie’s tale is lusciously illustrated.
And, as with Harold’s tale, Queenie’s is built upon compassion and empathy. Lovely.
