Be the helpers

“You don’t need to know the future to be hopeful. You just need to embrace the concept of possibility. To accept that the unknowability of the future is the key, and that there are versions of that future that are brighter and fairer than this one. The future is open.”

~ Matt Haig, The Comfort Book

Hope can be an elusive animal in dark times. We get stuck believing that the darkness is everywhere and the darkness is forever, when reality dictates that we never live in more than just one moment in time, and we are not given to know the next. The next moment, whether we like it or not, will be different. The next will bring change.

Mr. Rogers’ mama taught him, and us, when the news is filled with catastrophe, to always look for the helpers. On the sidelines, there will always be helpers. “Because if you look for the helpers, you’ll know that there is hope.”

If hope is the acceptance of change and possibility, and the allowing for a better future than the one we can see from here, then love is the embodiment of that hope. Love accepts the charge of hope, love brings the change, love loads the dice of possibility. One inch at a time, one cell at a time. Love reaches out from every corner of hope, bringing the light from the ground up.

The next moment, whether we like it or not, will be different. The next will bring change.

Look for the helpers, then become the helpers.

Time to love louder.
