Afloat

“No one knew the name of this day;
Born quietly from deepest night,
It hid its face in light,
Demanded nothing for itself,
Opened out to offer each of us
A field of brightness that traveled ahead,
Providing in time, ground to hold our footsteps
And the light of thought to show the way.

The mind of the day draws no attention;
It dwells within the silence with elegance
To create a space for all our words,
Drawing us to listen inward and outward.

We seldom notice how each day is a holy place
Where the eucharist of the ordinary happens,
Transforming our broken fragments
Into an eternal continuity that keeps us.

Somewhere in us a dignity presides
That is more gracious than the smallness
That fuels us with fear and force,
A dignity that trusts the form a day takes.

So at the end of this day, we give thanks
For being betrothed to the unknown
And for the secret work
Through which the mind of the day
And wisdom of the soul become one.”

~ John O’Donohue, The Inner History of a Day
(To Bless the Space Between Us)

When so many–including the one once again at the helm of the greatest power on earth–are cut off from the root of Life, Oneness, Wholeness, Unity, What Is…

When so many–including the leaders who steer the consciousness of a country–have abandoned truth and love and everything good and beautiful in favor of more power, more power, more power, me first, me first, me first…

When so many–including those who have abdicated their responsibilities as stewards of a people and a civilization and a land–have lost themselves in a sea of narcissism and fear and hatred…

What are we to do?

This is a start.

This may even be everything.

May we find that dignity within
May we fan that spark to flame
May we shine out to the world

Beacons of love
Lanterns of mercy
Chimes of grace, whispers of hope

Candles
of humanity
Bobbing on a sea of insanity

May we find one another
Arms outstretched
May we build a ship of love
And pull to shore, everything we can.

Time to love louder
