Create one spark

“Close your eyes.
Gather all the kindling
About your heart
To create one spark.
That is all you need
To nourish the flame
That will cleanse the dark
Of its weight of festered fear.”

~ John O’Donohue, To Bless the Space Between Us

There is no small amount of festered fear to be had today. It swirls and eddies and can refuse to leave us alone; it can hang us up, pull us under. It is as real as it gets. It is rational and founded. It cannot be swept away.

But what if we gathered all the kindling about our hearts to create one spark? What if we transformed that fear, one raggedy breath at a time, into hope? What if we shook the festering fear from our shoulders for just a second here, a moment there, long enough to let hope breathe and blossom? Frustrated hope. Pissed off hope. Exhausted hope. The flavor matters not, so long as it defies the fear for one minute, or two.

What if we gave the fear the finger once a day–as an act of spite or bitterness even, if that’s all the transformative power at our fingertips–and allowed that defiance to propel us into desperate acts of hope? Small acts. Seeming nothings. Little reachings out from me to you, from you to me. Just one little thread of the web being strengthened at a time by one little spark of hope.

What if we kindled all that we had and created just one spark? What if we did?

Time to love louder
