Just like that

Autumn turned to winter overnight. The temperature dropped. The sun ran away. The wind blew out the wet and harassed what was left into snow. The flu arrived. All in the wee hours. Peace - and the cozies of winter - to you, KJ

A Reminder

I have wanted to "make books" since around the sixth grade, and I published my first book when I was in my late thirties. My point is that the time in between was not wasted - submarine service, marriage, college, bringing up three kids, starting a school for them, and so forth. This kind of... Continue Reading →

A confession…

I think I killed a mole this morning. This might not seem that strange. Or maybe it does. Some explanation, possibly... About four years ago, my brother moved in next door. The thirteen-lined gophers that previously inhabited his land staged a revolt. His acres of lawn were pocked with earthen mounds, and the gophers themselves... Continue Reading →

Structure Reprise

Just kidding. I'm done. Were you worried? I have to say, that Structure Series was more than I bargained for. I thought I could tinker away at it, here and there, in between things. But that was not going to get it done before my Writers' Group meeting. Thanks to a marathon of post-generation, and... Continue Reading →

Happy Autumn

It's August. I keep refreshing my trusty weather page, but it seems we topped out at 58 today. In August. I'm sure summer isn't over for good, but at the moment all indicators are pointing to starting the year's first fire. It's chilly in the house and my toes are having circulatory problems. The wind... Reintegration and Poop

Vacation let-down. Back-to-the-grind blahs. Post-traumatic stress disorder. Whatever you call it, I haven't missed it. It used to hit me hard. Every time I left home, every time company abandoned me, I would struggle with the realities of after-shock. At least a day, sometimes several, would be lost to my inability to cope gracefully with... Continue Reading →

The camping trip that wasn’t

We should be camping right now. Soaking up the fresh air and relaxing in the cool waters. Watching the stars by firelight, both dancing to the rhythm of creation, tugging us along behind. Basking in the glow of new places and chocking them up in the annals of camping history. But we're not. We're at... Continue Reading →

The right kind of people…

In an email exchange regarding the transferrance of some 36" tree protectors (a hot commodity on any market), I noticed the subtle tagline at the end of our correspondent's message. We often see, 'Sent from my iPhone,' or, 'Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S5 Tablet,' or, 'Sent from my mobile device that is way better... Continue Reading →

Artsy Wrens

Well, first of all, as of Thursday, the Meadowlark has been singing again, which I think is amazing. Apparently the moratorium on joyful song after the loss of a brood lasts ten days. But now they are over, and the living commences once again! Today as I fought to sleep in past 4am, the wrens,... Continue Reading →

Camping Allergy

I'm not sure why exactly it is, but 100% - no kidding, it's an actual statistic - 100% of the camping trips we take to our favorite local park include some allotment of intense illness. We go every Fathers' Day weekend, destined for a quick and dirty trip close by, often to get our camping... Continue Reading →

Sackloth and ashes

A pair of horses, Ruby and Chester, used to live in our neighbor’s pasture. But they are gone; only their nameplates on the fence remain. Some cows called the pasture home for a while, but the price of a calf was too steep to replace them once they were retired to the freezer. Grown over... Continue Reading →
