God in dirt

We are a fickle creation. Capable of such amazing feats of love and mercy, yet so often stuck in judgment and vice. We may stand in awe of God's majesty when we are hit in the head with it - when it comes to us as lightening to the scalp - but so often anything... Continue Reading →

Right here, right now.

One of the fifth century fathers said that we must establish ourselves firmly inside our skin with nothing protruding outside. At the same time we are full of vivacity, we move fast and are capable of acting quickly. Why? Because we are not reaching after anything, the aim and content of our life in this... Every day waking

What a challenge... to be awake. The literal sense of being awake is a difficult enough task at times, but the deeper, the meaningful, the real awake is an even more elusive creature. Every time I go through my little devotional I get stuck at the same page. It challenges me to rise up and be... Continue Reading →

Money Talks

George Bernard Shaw, so the story goes, once said to a society matron, "Madam, I'll wager you would go to bed with me for five pounds." She was instantly indignant. How could he think such a thing? He paused as if thinking and asked, "What if I offered you one hundred thousand pounds?" She hesitated... Continue Reading →

The recovery of a sunset

When that notorious beauty-lover Oscar Wilde announced in The Decay of Lying, "Nobody of any real culture... ever talks nowadays about the beauty of a sunset. Sunsets are quite old-fashioned," sunsets reeled under the blow, then recovered. ~Susan Sontag, An Argument About Beauty The question of beauty is, as they say, subjective. Sadly, it changes with the... Continue Reading →

Advice I can finally follow…

What a wonder each day's sunrise! As soft rays of light peek over the trees, it is always as if for the first time. Dawn beckons with an invitation to begin anew, to see things in a fresh way. "Yesterday is past," it whispers; "you only have today and all its possibilities." Hope rises with... Continue Reading →

The Letting Goes

Again, Cast Light leaves me no choice but to reblog. What an excellent steward of the gift of words. Cast on…

“Sometimes I go about with pity for myself and all the while Great Winds are carrying me across the sky.” – Ojibway saying

On the days that don’t make sense, the ones that chip away at our core, rather our ego, we are being broken and remolded for something new. A slow releasing of what’s not important anymore, the arm wrestle of growth, a series of letting goes.

And in those moments of the mundane, we can let feelings and moods rise to the top and move through them to finish what’s been started. And in the midst of the dry days, the hollow is transforming into the hallowed. Faith holds our hand to the other side and gratitude shines the light of what is ours here and now.

Flowers bloom. The sun rises. Easter always comes.

Wait in the Waiting

Emily_2014_1026_046.JPGMy first reblog. How exciting. Thanks to Andrew at Andrew’s View of the Week, I recently stumbled upon Cast Light, an treasure trove of encouragement to always cast light, rather than shadow in our lives. And who doesn’t need that encouragement?  Thanks, Andrew!

Groove on, Cast Light!

“And somehow the transformation you knew would never come, that impossible plumping of fresh life and revelation, does come. It manifests itself in unseen slowness. So it would happen to me and so it will happen to all who set out to knead their pain and wounds, their hopes and hungers, into bread. Waiting for the yeasting of the human soul.” – Sue Monk Kidd, When the Heart Waits

We rush and get busy to do something, anything to make the waiting seem less and go faster. But in the waiting, the quiet, if we listen and trust, we find ourselves yet again. And time is not wasted in the waiting. We are right in the middle of becoming who we are meant to be, molded by patience and grace.

We arrive and depart, become and transform again and again. Growing and wilting, blooming again with a depth of beauty that only…

A treasure lost in the computer…

Things are tightening down a bit.  And loosening up.  My image of God, my perception of the Truth, my model of Perfection.  They are being honed in and refined, while at the same time broadening out and becoming more and more universal.  It is an interesting process, and one which has proven greatly frustrating, and... First Article Submission

I just hit send, submitting my first opinion article to a local magazine.  And I'm only sweating a tiny little bit.  Who knows if it will ever see print, but I am pretty excited to have even tried, so I'll take that as a win. Thanks to you, dear blog readers, for your likes and... Continue Reading →

Astrophysics for Writers

My family has been enjoying watching episodes of a very well-done show on astrophysics, quantum theory, and all the big questions that they raise. We've seen lots of approaches to the biggest and smallest science can fathom, and this series is head and shoulders above the rest. It helps that Morgan Freeman hosts, because who...
